holiday cottages in Sutherland

If you’re looking for somewhere to really get away from it all, then one of our holiday cottages in Sutherland is definitely the right place. You can’t get any further away in mainland Britain than this, its most northerly county. Sparsely populated, this is a landscape of endless moors and high mountains, of empty roads and old ruined crofts. Cape Wrath is Britain’s most northwesterly point, while John O’Groats in nearby Caithness, is generally considered the end of mainland Britain

The county town of Dornoch sits on the coast and boasts some good sandy beaches, as well as one of the finest golf courses outside the USA. A visit to the town is an essential part of one of our Sutherland cottage holidays. Dunrobin Castle, just a few miles away from Dornoch, is a magnificent French inspired castle that is the seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. It features some wonderful formal gardens overlooking the sea, and also plays host to Highland Games in August. The old fishing village of Helmsdale is also well worth a visit and don’t miss the high cliffs on the rugged coastline to the north of the county.
